Surfs up with Surf City Allstars

Take a trip down memory lane next weekend with the Surf City Allstars, featuring original Beach Boy David Marks and Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean. The Surf City Allstars will be performing Saturday, Apr. 21, in the Holiday Bay Room at the lodge. General Admission tickets are $42; VIP $67. Tickets are available at the POA office and on the POA website at canyonlakepoa.com.

The Surf City Allstars are the only tribute band where every member toured in the Beach Boys band. When you hear the Surf City Allstars in concert, you get the authentic surf sound and harmonies that were taught to the Allstars by Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys and Jan Berry of Jan & Dean. They offer a performance so true to the sounds of the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean that they have won ringing endorsements from members of the original bands.

The Surf City Allstars were formed in the early 80s with band members who were touring with both the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean. Band members include David Marks of the Beach Boys, Dean Torrence of Jan & Dean, David Logeman, Philip Bardowell, Chris Farmer and Aaron Broering of both the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean.

Original Beach Boys member David Lee Marks started rehearsals with the Beach Boys in February 1962 as its rhythm guitarist. He recorded four studio albums with the Beach Boys and played guitar and sang on many of the Beach Boys biggest hits: Surfin’ Safari, Surfin’ USA, Surfer Girl, Catch A Wave, Little Deuce Coupe, 409, Shut Down, In My Room and many more.

In recent years, David has recorded on the Beach Boys That’s Why God Made The Radio album and was a guest artist on Brian Wilson’s 2015 solo release No Pier Pressure.

David also toured the world as part of the highly publicized Beach Boys 50th Anniversary Celebration and toured alongside Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and Jeff Beck in what was called one of the top tours of 2013. He still tours as a special guest with the touring Beach Boys as well as with the Surf City Allstars.

Dean Torrence is the co-founder of the hit surf duo, Jan & Dean. Dean first teamed up with Jan Berry in the 1950s while they both attended high school in Los Angeles. The duo went on to score a huge string of hit songs beginning in 1959 until Jan’s terrible car accident in 1966.

Since Jan’s untimely death occurred in 2004, Dean has kept their music alive and brings the Greatest Hits of Jan & Dean live as a special guest of the Surf City Allstars.

Some of the chart-topping songs Dean performs live with the Surf City Allstars include Jan & Dean’s number one hit Surf City, The Little Old Lady From Pasadena, Deadman’s Curve, Drag City, Honolulu Lulu, Ride the Wild Surf, Sidewalk Surfin’, New Girl In School and Linda. Dean also sings Barbara Ann, the hit he sang on the Beach Boys’ Party album.

“This show will be a high energy concert with David Marks and Dean Torrence and the Surf City Allstars performing nothing but hit songs. They tell me that there may be some audience interaction as well,” said Concert Promoter Doug Schultz. “It’s going to be a magical night.”

Local musician and Canyon Lake resident Aprile DeAnne will be opening the show. Aprile has performed on numerous occasions at both the lodge and country club. In 2017, Aprile opened for one of her favorite bands, the new wave group Berlin, when they performed at the lodge. She also opened for the Four Tops at the Rose Bowl.

Also on sale now are tickets to the POA’s remaining 2018 concerts: Keith Anderson and Berlin. Country music artist Keith Anderson will perform on June 30. “Every Time I Hear Your Name” and “I Still Miss You” are among Keith’s hit songs.

New wave band Berlin, featuring Terri Nunn, returns to Canyon Lake Sept. 15. Berlin rose to international acclaim in 80s with a string of hits anchored by singer Terri Nunn’s powerful voice and charismatic persona. “Take My Breath Away” and “No More Words” are two of their chart-topping hits.
