Maui Monday brings taste of islands to ‘paradise’

Although Maui Monday is a relatively new celebration in Canyon Lake, it appears to have been added to the list of “traditions” within the community. Friends and family members gathered on Sunset Beach this past Monday to enjoy summer’s “final aloha.” The new children’s playground was a big hit with the kids, as adults relaxed and enjoyed the Labor Day holiday. ABC Bounce again provided a water slide for the youngsters.

Mike Shroyer of Good Time Entertainment kicked off the party with music and contests such as hula hoop challenges for all ages. Many Canyon Lakers were dressed for the occasion in Hawaiian-style clothing, and complimentary leis were handed out. This year the children were really “into” the occasion with quite a few young girls wearing hula skirts and flowers.

According to many, the food this year was “the best yet,” with hungry Canyon Lakers waiting in line for the Hawaiian cuisine. Of course the cotton candy and Hawaiian Shave Ice remained summertime crowd favorites.

After the sun set, the highlight of the evening was the dancers and fire show put on by Polynesian Entertainment Group. As the wahines and warriors performed their traditional Polynesian dances, the crowd responded with “ooohs” and “ahhhs” and screams of delight. The children were more involved than ever, joining in on several occasions with dancing to the live Polynesian music.

It’s hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner! Aloha!
