The August Chamber Mixer will be hosted by Sports Stop Pub & Grill in the Canyon Lake Towne Center on Tuesday, August 30, at 5:30 p.m. Mixers provide an opportunity to network, make contacts and meet new people. Participants are welcome to bring business cards and a door prize to promote their business.

The next Chamber Luncheon will be held Wednesday, September 14, at 11:30 a.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. It will feature Mayor Tim Brown, who will make a presentation outlining when lobbying in Sacramento is the most effective.

Here’s a preview of what he will cover when he says, “They come up with some crazy ideas in Sacramento. If we have any chance of stopping the insanity we have to know how the game is played. Part of the game is knowing the wickets that have to be traversed in order to get laws passed.

“For a new law to be passed it usually needs to be championed by a legislator with solid social connections or backed by heavyweight lobbying interests. It’s sometimes possible to get non-controversial local interest legislation passed without too much trouble; but anything that costs money or affects people throughout the state faces a grueling process.

“Stopping legislation is sometimes easier but it’s still not simple. A typical piece of legislation goes through two or three committees in both houses of the legislature, is voted on by both legislative bodies, is subjected to final drafting

by members from both the Assembly and the Senate, must be voted on again and finally must be signed by the Governor.

“Each of those steps creates a choke point where legislation can be modified or stopped. Stopping a piece of legislation necessitates understanding when these chokepoints occur and influencing choke point decision-makers.”

He will provide information about dates to keep in mind and suggest strategies for making one’s voice better received.

Lunch is $8 and catered by Sports Stop and The Cup Above. Reservations are suggested by contacting 244-6124 or canyonlakechamber@outlook.com.
