Free Spaghetti Dinner

Seniors are invited to a free spaghetti dinner at the Senior Center on Sunday, July 31. Doors open at 5 p.m. with dinner at 5:30. This event is hosted by the Family Matters Club, which also will offer a free drawing.

Run for City Council

On November 8, 2016, an election will be held for three City Council seats. Each seat up for election will be for a full four-year term. The nomination period for these offices began July 18 and will end on August 12 at 12 noon (unless an incumbent fails to file). If an incumbent fails to file by August 12, at 12 noon, the nomination period will be extended for all NON-incumbents to August 17, at 5 p.m.

All people interested in running for City Council are encouraged to seek an appointment to pull nomination papers, and a separate appointment to return papers, to ensure that staff is on hand to assist in ensuring the documents are complete and correct before finishing the filing.

Fall Ball Signups

Canyon Lake Little League is taking online Fall Ball signups at www.clllca.com. The cost for players ages 4-up is $65. Fall season will run approximately seven to eight weeks, September to November. Player registration includes a hat, shirt, belt and socks. Registration for Fall Ball will end August 31.

CLLL is always looking for good coaches. Fall Ball is less demanding and a great way for new coaches to test the waters and for experienced coaches to keep in touch without the time demands of the spring season. Steering Wheel Covers

With hot weather here, the Canyon Lake Lioness are offering custom-made steering wheel covers made of many different materials and patterns, which keep steering wheels from becoming too hot to handle. They also work well during cold weather. The price is $8 for one $15 for two. Contact Laverne Cann at 951-244-5715 to purchase.

The profits from this project will go to one of the Lioness Club’s ongoing philanthropic projects such as Guide Dogs of the Desert, HOPE. food pantry and the annual breast cancer tournament in Canyon Lake.

Caregivers Connection

Men and women who provide care for their husbands, wives or parents for illnesses such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart issues or Parkinson’s are invited to attend Caregivers Connection, a support group that meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in room 6 in the gym of Canyon Lake Community Church from 10 a.m. to noon.

Next meetings will be held August 8 and 22 and will give caregivers the opportunity to share experiences and gain support from others who understand their circumstances.

Bereavement Support

Pastor Peter Van Dyke will facilitate a Bereavement Support Group in the chapel at Canyon Lake Community Church, starting Monday, August 22. There will be a choice of attending meetings at 10 a.m. or 7 p.m.

The group will meet for 13 weeks and provides insight and support to those who have experienced a loss and desire healing and encouragement. The group setting is very comfortable and helps people to determine whether they’re grieving in a way that leads to hope and ultimate healing. For more information, contact Pastor Pete at 951-244-1877, ext. 204.

Menifee Valley Museum

The Menifee Valley Historical Museum contains displays about Canyon Lake history, provided by Canyon Lake pioneers Don and Elinor Martin. The museum is open Sundays, from 1 to 4 p.m. Don and Elinor sometimes serve as docents. It’s located in the old Menifee Elementary School on Garbani Rd. in Menifee.

Furry Friends Camp

Animal Friends of the Valleys’ “Furry Friends Kids’ Camp” teaches children kindness and empathy for their animal friends. The final session begins August 1 for ages 8 to 11. It will meet Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $60 per camper and includes the AFV Camper T-shirt and all craft materials. Campers are asked to bring their own water and a snack. Bingo at the Senior Center

The Lioness Club hosts Bingo every first and third Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center. Games are open to all members of the community and are $20 for a 12-sheet set and $10 for a six-sheet set. Funds raised by bingo are contributed to Lions’ projects for the sight-impaired and the needy of the area.

Toastmasters Meets Weekly

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce Toastmasters Club meets every Tuesday, 12:05 to 1:05 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room/Council Chamber. The group works on public speaking and leadership skills. For more information, contact Maureen Smith at 951-566-7185.

Coffee with Nancy

Residents are invited to meet with Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District Division 1 Director Nancy Horton, a Canyon Lake resident, the last Tuesday of every month, 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Sports Stop. She is available to talk about changing guidelines for water conservation, questions about the district’s conservation rebates, etc. Nancy also invites residents to bring their water bill for clarification of costs.

Genealogy Research

Breast Cancer Resources

Bosom Buddies is a breast cancer support group in Canyon Lake led by Janelle Basham and Kimberly Slingerland. They mentor, educate and support newly diagnosed breast cancer patients during their breast cancer journey. Visit www.CLBosomBuddies.com and Canyon Lake Bosom Buddies Facebook page.

Michelle’s Place is a breast cancer resource center serving this area, located at 27645 Jefferson Ave., Ste. 117, in Temecula. The center’s mission is to provide emotional and educational support to those touched with breast cancer and facilitate breast health care services. Host Families Sought

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, in cooperation with area high schools, is looking for local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries: Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, to name a few.

ASSE students are enthusiastic and excited to experience American culture while they practice their English. They also love to share their own culture and language with their host families.

The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

Clothing Wanted

A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are continuous. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Lock Vehicles

Canyon Lake Community Patrol reminds residents to double-check the doors and windows in their vehicles each evening and be sure alarm systems are activated. Records show most thefts from vehicles in Canyon Lake occur because doors were left unlocked or windows left open. They also say residents shouldn’t leave items of value in front yards or driveways.

Open cars and valuables left outside can lead to “crimes of opportunity” that can be easily prevented. If a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Then call Community Patrol.

Family Matters Swapmeet

The 2nd annual Family Matters Club Swapmeet will be held May 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Port Park. Organizers have announced that parking spaces on the blacktop will be available for $15; vendors can reserve booth space on the lawn for $35. The Family Matters Club will be selling hot dogs, chips, snack food and beverages to keep everyone powered up for their shopping/selling.
