Spotlight on Seniors

It’s time to recognize high school seniors who are graduating with academic or athletic honors from local private or public high schools. Parents or students are invited to send a photo and college resume information naming awards and community involvement for the annual “Spotlight on Seniors” series. Care for the Caregiver

Caregivers are at an extremely high risk of physical and emotional issues due solely to the fact that they are dealing with the added stress of caring for a loved one. On June 6, Jane Farmer, community relations director of the Desert Hills Memory Care Center in Hemet, will speak to the Caregivers Connection group on the importance of taking care of yourself in a way that will benefit your ability to care for your loved one with dementia in a positive way. Question and answer time will follow.

Men and women who provide care for their husbands, wives or parents for illnesses such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart issues or Parkinson’s are invited to attend Caregivers Connection, a support group that meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in room 6 in the gym of Canyon Lake Community Church from 10 a.m. to noon. Note that the June meetings are held on different dates to accommodate Vacation Bible School.

Pack 346 Recruiting

Cub Scout Pack 346 will be holding a recruitment event for those interested in Cub Scouting for the 2016/2017 on June 5,  from 3 to 5 p.m., with a Rocket Rally at Canyon Hills Sports Park. Boys currently in kindergarten through 4th grade interested in Scouting are encouraged to come meet Pack 346 and have fun designing and flying bottle rockets.  Light snacks will be provided at this no-cost event.

Cub Scout Pack 346 serves Canyon Lake, Canyon Hills and Tuscany Hills and is for boys in 1st-5th grade. For more information, contact socalpack346@gmail.com or 951-363-3346.

Summer Tennis Program

The Summer Tennis Program for ages 4 to 18 will run June 7 to 30 at the Canyon Lake Tennis Center. Lessons will be on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with times to be determined after the number of participants and age groups are known.

The program offers two one-hour lessons per week for four weeks – a total of eight lessons for $100. Mommy/Daddy and Me lessons will be available for ages 4 and 5. Lessons will be taught by Canyon Lake Tennis Pros Baba Soysa and Tony Chatfield.

Toastmasters Meets Weekly

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce Toastmasters Club meets every Tuesday, 12:05 to 1:05 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room/Council Chamber. The group works on public speaking and leadership skills. For more information, contact Maureen Smith at 951-566-7185.

Bingo at the Senior Center

The Lioness Club hosts Bingo every first and third Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center. Games are open to all members of the community and are $20 for a 12-sheet set and $10 for a six-sheet set. Funds raised by bingo are contributed to Lions’ projects for the sight-impaired and the needy of the area.

Breast Cancer Resources

Bosom Buddies is a breast cancer support group in Canyon Lake led by Janelle Basham and Kimberly Slingerland. They mentor, educate and support newly diagnosed breast cancer patients during their breast cancer journey. Visit www.CLBosomBuddies.com and Canyon Lake Bosom Buddies Facebook page.

Michelle’s Place is a breast cancer resource center serving this area, located at 27645 Jefferson Ave., Ste. 117, in Temecula. The center’s mission is to provide emotional and educational support to those touched with breast cancer and facilitate breast health care services.

Learn more about self-help groups that provide an open, accepting environment where you can learn from others and share your experiences. Daytime and evening groups are led by trained facilitators who happen to also be breast cancer survivors.

The center’s regular hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Learn about available services and resources at michellesplace.org or 951-699-5455.

Host Families Sought

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, in cooperation with area high schools, is looking for local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries: Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, to name a few.

ASSE students are enthusiastic and excited to experience American culture while they practice their English. They also love to share their own culture and language with their host families.

The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

Clothing Wanted

A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are continuous. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Lock Vehicles

Canyon Lake Community Patrol reminds residents to double-check the doors and windows in their vehicles each evening and be sure alarm systems are activated. Records show most thefts from vehicles in Canyon Lake occur because doors were left unlocked or windows left open. They also say residents shouldn’t leave items of value in front yards or driveways.

Open cars and valuables left outside can lead to “crimes of opportunity” that can be easily prevented. If a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Then call Community Patrol.

Call Community Patrol at 951-244-5950 any time there is a suspicious-looking person.

MOMS Next

Mothers of school aged kids are invited to MOMS Next, a ministry of MOPS International. It meets every second and fourth Tuesday, 9 to 11 a.m., at Canyon Lake Community Church.

The moms fellowship over hot coffee and a warm breakfast, then enjoy a speaker or craft. Those desiring “coffee talk” are invited to contact Gretchen Daley at 951-595-9153 or see the Facebook page at “MOMS Next at Canyon Lake Community Church.”

Family Matters Swapmeet

The 2nd annual Family Matters Club Swapmeet will be held May 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Port Park. Organizers have announced that parking spaces on the blacktop will be available for $15; vendors can reserve booth space on the lawn for $35. The Family Matters Club will be selling hot dogs, chips, snack food and beverages to keep everyone powered up for their shopping/selling.
