Spotlight on Seniors

It’s time to recognize high school seniors graduating with academic or athletic honors from local private or public high schools. Parents or students are invited to send a photo and college resume information naming awards and community involvement for the annual “Spotlight on Seniors” series. The Senior Senior Center will not have the monthly potluck scheduled for May 29.

Pack Wrap and Post Celebration

Debby Gagnon of Pack Wrap and Post invites Canyon Lakers to stop by the Towne Center business for Customer Appreciation Day on June 1. Cake, sparkling cider and punch will be available starting at 10 a.m., and Postmaster Shan Seitz has been invited to attend.

“We are planning to celebrate by inviting the community to stop by so we can thank them for being such awesome customers,” says Debby. “We are celebrating 21 years as a contract post office and 30 years in business. We wouldn’t still be here without our customers.” Pack Wrap and Post is located at 31566 Railroad Canyon Rd., in the back left building of the Towne Center.

Meet with Nancy Horton

Residents are invited to meet with Elsinore Valley Municipal Water District Division 1 Director Nancy Horton, a Canyon Lake resident, the last Tuesday of every month, 10 to 11:30 a.m., at the Sports Stop. Her next meeting is scheduled for May 30. She will be available to talk about the Governor’s conservation rules for water districts, questions about the district’s conservation rebates, etc. Nancy invites residents to bring their water bill for clarification of costs.

Care for the Caregiver

Caregivers are at an extremely high risk of physical and emotional issues due solely to the fact that they are dealing with the added stress of caring for a loved one. On June 6, Jane Farmer, community relations director of the Desert Hills Memory Care Center in Hemet, will speak to the Caregivers Connection group on the importance of taking care of yourself in a way that will benefit your ability to care for your loved one with dementia in a positive way. Question and answer time will follow.

Men and women who provide care for their husbands, wives or parents for illnesses such as dementia, Alzheimer’s, stroke, heart issues or Parkinson’s are invited to attend Caregivers Connection, a support group that meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month in room 6 in the gym of Canyon Lake Community Church from 10 a.m. to noon. Note that the June meetings are held on different dates to accommodate Vacation Bible School.

Pack 346 Recruiting

Cub Scout Pack 346 will be holding a recruitment event for those interested in Cub Scouting for the 2016/2017 on June 5,  from 3 to 5 p.m., with a Rocket Rally at Canyon Hills Sports Park. Boys currently in kindergarten through 4th grade interested in Scouting are encouraged to come meet Pack 346 and have fun designing and flying bottle rockets.  Light snacks will be provided at this no-cost event.

Summer Tennis Program

The Summer Tennis Program for ages 4 to 18 will run June 7 to 30 at the Canyon Lake Tennis Center. Lessons will be on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, with times to be determined after the number of participants and age groups are known.

The program offers two one-hour lessons per week for four weeks – a total of eight lessons for $100. Mommy/Daddy and Me lessons will be available for ages 4 and 5. Lessons will be taught by Canyon Lake Tennis Pros Baba Soysa and Tony Chatfield.

‘Wonderland’ Auditions

Auditions for Canyon Lake Community Theatre’s all-kids production of “Wonderland” will be on Saturday, June 11, in the activity building at East Port Park. Children in kindergarten through 8th grade are welcome. Kids K through 2nd grade are scheduled to audition from 11 a.m. to noon, or they may simply sign up and be cast without an audition. Toastmasters Meets Weekly

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce Toastmasters Club meets every Tuesday, 12:05 to 1:05 p.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room/Council Chamber. The group works on public speaking and leadership skills. For more information, contact Maureen Smith at 951-566-7185.

Sleep Study

Those who have been clinically diagnosed with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s Disease may be eligible to participate in a sleep study. A non-interventional pilot study, sponsored by Science 37, will allow participants to learn more about the disease, specifically sleep patterns. Researchers will be testing the functionality of two non-invasive, wearable sensors that detect movement and sleep.

Enrolled subjects will be asked to wear two sensors for five days, fill out a questionnaire and undergo a nighttime sleep study in a local lab. To qualify, one must be between the ages of 50 and 85, have a clinical diagnosis of mild to moderate Alzheimer’s and be willing to spend one night in a lab for a sleep study.

Sewing, Quilting Group

Breast Cancer Resources

Bosom Buddies is a breast cancer support group in Canyon Lake led by Janelle Basham and Kimberly Slingerland. They mentor, educate and support newly diagnosed breast cancer patients during their breast cancer journey. Visit www.CLBosomBuddies.com and Canyon Lake Bosom Buddies Facebook page.

Michelle’s Place is a breast cancer resource center serving this area, located at 27645 Jefferson Ave., Ste. 117, in Temecula. The center’s mission is to provide emotional and educational support to those touched with breast cancer and facilitate breast health care services. Bingo at the Senior Center

The Lioness Club hosts Bingo every first and third Sunday, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Senior Center. Games are open to all members of the community and are $20 for a 12-sheet set and $10 for a six-sheet set. Funds raised by bingo are contributed to Lions’ projects for the sight-impaired and the needy of the area.

Host Families Sought

ASSE International Student Exchange Programs, in cooperation with area high schools, is looking for local families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 to 18 from a variety of countries: Norway, Denmark, Spain, Italy, Japan, to name a few.

ASSE students are enthusiastic and excited to experience American culture while they practice their English. They also love to share their own culture and language with their host families.

The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance. ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a wide variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

Clothing Wanted

A couple in Canyon Lake regularly makes deliveries of food and clothing to the Riverside City Mission, where the needs of the hungry and homeless are continuous. Donations can be dropped off at the Coldwell Banker office in the Towne Center, 31620 Railroad Canyon Rd.

Lock Vehicles

Canyon Lake Community Patrol reminds residents to double-check the doors and windows in their vehicles each evening and be sure alarm systems are activated. Records show most thefts from vehicles in Canyon Lake occur because doors were left unlocked or windows left open. They also say residents shouldn’t leave items of value in front yards or driveways.

Open cars and valuables left outside can lead to “crimes of opportunity” that can be easily prevented. If a crime is in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Then call Community Patrol.

Call Community Patrol at 951-244-5950 any time there is a suspicious-looking person.

MOMS Next

Mothers of school aged kids are invited to MOMS Next, a ministry of MOPS International. It meets every second and fourth Tuesday, 9 to 11 a.m., at Canyon Lake Community Church.

Family Matters Swapmeet

The 2nd annual Family Matters Club Swapmeet will be held May 7, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at East Port Park. Organizers have announced that parking spaces on the blacktop will be available for $15; vendors can reserve booth space on the lawn for $35. The Family Matters Club will be selling hot dogs, chips, snack food and beverages to keep everyone powered up for their shopping/selling.
