Earth Day, Day of Child celebrated at Library

Today’s Preschool Craft and Story Time with Miss Ginny Furnish will celebrate mothers. This activity for preschool aged children includes stories, music and crafts. It starts at 11:30 a.m. in the City Multi-purpose Room. (Check in inside the Library.)

Miss Ginny and her preschoolers, with the help of Bill Evans at the piano, celebrated Earth Day on April 22 during Preschool Craft and Story Time. The following Monday, April 25, the Library celebrated “Dia de Los Niños” with crafts and colorful dancers. Everyone enjoyed making butterflies and concocting goodies at the craft tables. Later, all went outside to be entertained by youthful dancers from Ballet Folklorico.

According to Librarian Sandra Brautigam, the 20th anniversary of the “Day of the Child, Day of the Book” was a great success. More than 100 people attended events at the Library that day. Haseena Shokory was the winner of an activity that lasted throughout April. Haseena’s ticket was the one drawn from all the children who entered their names in a drawing when visiting the Library. She won a jar full of candy and toys donated by Canyon Lake Friends of the Library.

Tutoring Program

A new tutoring program will debut at the Library tomorrow, May 7, at 11 a.m. The program, to be held on Saturdays from 11 a.m. to noon, is the creation of two sisters, Chelsea and Trinity Chikwanda. Offered will be assistance with SAT and PSAT preparation, and general subjects for K-8.

The sisters are from Roots To Grow Tutoring and say, “We believe all kids have potential.  These fundamental years of education are what develop their roots and further enhance their growth. Free tutoring may go a long way. We hope to spark a desire for learning in all these kids and provide a free way to do so.”

Chelsesa is a member of the Academic Decathlon Team and the National Honor Society.  She takes AP classes in English, Chemistry, U.S. History, Statistics and Calculus. Her specialties are English, History and SAT tutoring. Trinity participated in the National Junior Honor Society and specializes in Pre-algebra, Algebra and Algebra II.
