The Friday Flyer welcomes humor columnist

Most readers are at least a little bit acquainted with Pat VanDyke. They have seen her lovely Photos of the Week in The Friday Flyer and read stories through the years about her children and her battle with sarcoma cancer. Most recently, they read about the retirement of her husband, Pastor Pete VanDyke, from the senior pastor position at Canyon Lake Community Church (see The Friday Flyer archives, January 8, 2016).

What many people may not realize is how funny Pat can be. Those who have seen her comments on Facebook compare her humor with that of renowned columnist Erma Bombeck, who humorously chronicled the ordinary life of a suburban housewife.

Listen, a pastor’s wife who can surprise her husband by showing up at church in curlers, robe and slippers to make an announcement in front of the congregation is someone who knows how to make fun of herself. The Bible says laughter is good medicine – and the VanDykes have needed that medicine often during their storm-tossed years.

As for the term “funny bone,” it’s a pun based on the name of the bone of the upper arm, “humerus,” and the word “humorous.” It’s often more painful than funny when you hit your “funny bone.” But humor is sometimes like that too.
