Pickleball players hold their first tournament

The first social tournament for Canyon Lake pickleball players was held Thursday night, February 18, at the Tennis Center.

According to spokesperson Terry Loy, 16 players of all skill levels were divided into four groups in the doubles blind draw tournament. Every player was paired up with a different partner in each match, and every player played four matches, with a break in between matches.

Team winners were Gary Sell, Inga Loy, John DeYoung and Chuck Newsom.

Jeannette Williams began providing pickleball classes on the new temporary courts in January. She estimates that she and her helpers taught more than 90 people how to play in just four weeks. There are now some 100 people playing the popular game.

This was the first social tournament for 2016 and players hope there will be many more as the weather warms up.

Those interested in learning more about pickleball or getting on the list of players may contact Jeannette Williams at clpickleball951@gmail.com or 951-244-4850. An announcement about the next tournament will be emailed to players on the list.
