Damp evening doesn’t deter Golf Cart Parade

The 5th annual Golf Cart Parade and Toy Drive was held on Sunday, December 13, sponsored by Street Carts of Canyon Lake and organized by Mike Shroyer, the club’s president. The Golf Cart Parade started in 2011 with about 20 golf carts participating. Since then, the parade has more than doubled in size, with 47 golf carts participating this year.

“This was our biggest turnout yet,” says Mike. “The creativity gets better and better every year, too. I was really impressed with some of the decorations – like the train with 5,750 lights and the participants who dressed in costumes to match the theme of their cart.”

Parade participants were asked to bring an unwrapped toy. Spectators were asked to give an unwrapped toy to any golf cart passing by. The toys were collected at the Lodge at the end of the parade.

Mike says, “A couple hundred toys were collected this year – more than we’ve ever collected.” Mike plans to give half the toys to HOPE, a local organization that serves Lake Elsinore and Canyon Lake families in need, and the other half to Calvary Chapel Canyon Hills, an organization Mike and his wife are involved in.

Parade participants started lining up on Blue Bird Dr. at 5 p.m., one hour before the official start of the parade. One of the participants, Sosy Robinson, says, “The lineup is part of the fun; it’s like one big block party for an hour before the parades starts. It was awesome.”

The procession headed down Canyon Lake Dr. South at 6. The sprinkles coming down from the sky didn’t seem to deter the hundreds of spectators who came out to watch the parade. Many of the participants tossed candy canes to the spectators lining the streets, while some of the spectators handed candy and toy donations to the participants.

The parade ended around 7:30 p.m. at the Lodge where Mike had cookies waiting for the participants and eight trophies waiting to be handed out to the owners of the “Best in Show” golf carts.

The ‘Best in Show’ winners were:

Beau and Stacy Brenton – Express Train

Devon and Dani Huff – Motorcycle Santa

Angie and Michael Bazaldua – Doggy

Mike Lemier – Woody Wagon

Rick and Gail Hauser – Pirates

Ken Dunagan and Nicole Pettit – Sleigh on Fire
