Pack 346 scouts experience the great outdoors

Canyon Lake Cub Scout Pack 346 was on the go again last month with more adventures. According to spokesperson Susan Gamble, scouts in the Tiger, Wolf and Bear dens headed out to the Ortega Highway and challenged themselves by hiking the 2.1-mile San Juan Loop Trail above Lake Elsinore. The boys searched along the trail for evidence of wildlife and practiced scat identification.

They also were able to practice their Outdoor Code, “As an American, I will do my best to be clean in my outdoor manners, be careful with fire, be considerate in the outdoors and be conservation minded.” The scouts ended their adventure with a trip to the well-known “Candy Store” on the Ortega Highway.

Meanwhile, at the same time, the Webelos (4th and 5th grade Cub Scouts) attended “Webelos Woods,” an outdoor camping adventure at the Mataguay Scout Ranch in Santa Ysabel. The weekend campout provides a look into what to expect when the Webelos become Boy Scouts.

Despite threatening skies, the few raindrops did nothing to dampen the spirits or the ground. Webelos from all over the area competed in many different scout-type events, with Pack 346 taking 2nd in skeetball and tug o’ war.

Susan says their proudest moment was their 1st place win in the fire starting event. The boys had to start a fire completely on their own, with no adult help, using only flint and steel. After starting the fire, the boys had to build it up enough to burn through a string dangling above.

In addition to fun and camaraderie, the scouts also earned several achievements/badges, including every boys’ favorite, “Cooking,” by preparing and cooking their own meals.

Pack 346 is for boys in 1st through 5th grade in Canyon Lake, Canyon Hills and Tuscany Hills . For more information, contact socalpack346@gmail.com or call 951-363-3346. New scouts are welcomed throughout the year.
