Family Matters Club provides afternoon of fun

The Family Matters Club has been busy! In addition to regular monthly meetings, members of the club put on two large community events last month, garnering help from other clubs.

Earlier in the month, the club co-hosted the Renaissance Faire with the Jr. Women’s Club.

Last Saturday, the Family Matters Club put on the Halloween Carnival at Holiday Harbor, assisted by members of the Women’s Golf Club, CLAMS and the Super Zinggs real estate group. The event included 17 free game booths and four craft booths, along with free face-painting and tattoos and the opportunity to make cupcakes and ice cream sundaes.

The concession stand was open and families filled up for the long night ahead on hot dogs, nachos, ribs and deep fried Oreos cooked up by club president Sosy Robinson.

“The event was great and so much larger than last year,” says club founder Shawna Bowen. The crafts included pumpkin decorating, sand art, foam projects and the Turkey Hand Coloring Contest.

The Super Zinggs hosted the “Pie in the Eye” booth where kids got a chance to lob a small whipped crème pie at the “bad guy in stockades.” The Zinggs offered a “zinger” for participating.

At the “Snake Pit,” children enjoyed pulling snakes from the slimy goo (aloe vera gel). And they got to play mini golf at a booth run by Women’s Golf. At the “Fear Factor” booth, the CLAMS whooped it up each time a kid got a hoop on a target.

Shawna says, “As the kids ran from booth to booth to collect their redemption spiders for playing games, the real excitement came when they reached the prize booth to redeem them. They got to choose from a large selection of Halloween novelties and goodies. A costume contest also was held.

Shawna would like to express the club’s appreciation for all the teen volunteers who assisted with set-up, tear-down and game booths. Jenny Teperson signed off on the volunteer hours and let the kids know that the Family Matters Club awards President Club Award Certificates for doing their volunteer service hours with the club.
