Nearly 400 children participated in the Summer Reading Program at the Canyon Lake Library and now are looking forward to the last week of the program and the final prize drawing. The program ends Saturday, August 1.

But first, youngsters are invited to one final program with Magician Ian Galloway, who will be performing at 4 p.m., Monday, July 27. Afterward, the prize drawing for extra reading tickets will take place, and the winning ticket will be drawn for the grand prize of an Alvarez RD8 six-string guitar.

Librarian Sandra Brautigam reminds participants that, even though this is the last of the extra reading prize drawings, they may still turn in their reading logs for prize coupons until next Saturday.

With the theme, “Reading to the Rhythm,” special programs this summer focused on music as well as reading. The Library’s own piano musician, Bill Evans, provided “Mr. Bill’s Play by Ear” program, in which he demonstrated how to make up music and lyrics for songs and dancing. Bill wrote a special song for that day with the following lyrics:

“The real truth is if ya wanna be cool, ya gotta read books and go to school;

There’s stars in the sky if ya wanna shine with them,

ya gotta read books and ya gotta have rhythm!”

This past Monday, Ginny Furnish continued the musical theme by providing a craft time where children styled their own banjo and flute. On June 29, Gail Bjelland also had a well attended craft program.

Sandra says, “The Summer Reading Programs is designed to assist children in continued development of their reading skills, shown to provide them an advantage when they return to school in the Fall. By not requiring special books to read, summer reading helps children find their own interests in reading for pleasure. This breaks the mold that reading is only for school work.”

She adds, “Reading for fun, or just because one wants to know something, is an important part of life-long learning, staying up with changes, and being flexible with the situations life may bring.”

Through the end of summer, the Library will continue to hold a story time for toddlers every Monday at 11 a.m., and a knitting program every Wednesday at 11 a.m.

The Library is located at the back of City Hall in the Towne Center. Hours are Monday, 10 to 7; Wednesday, 10 to 6; Friday, 10 to 6; and Saturday. 10 to 3. For more information, call the Library at 951-244-9181.
