Need to cool off? Olaf and Sven will be guests at the Disney movie’s “Frozen” party at the Library on July 6, at 3 p.m. This event will include snacks, prizes and, at 4 p.m., the feature film “Frozen.” Theme dress is welcome.

Relaxing somewhere cool and reading can earn tickets for prizes with the Canyon Lake Library Summer Reading Program. Every year the Library encourages reading with an incentive program. According to Librarian Sandra Brautigam, the program’s main focus is toward children, to associate reading with something besides school and homework and to keep up their reading skills during a time when reading and vocabulary building skills often slump.

The theme of this year’s program is “Reading to the Rhythm” and is designed to reward children with small prizes and certificates for time spent reading. The base program has a four-week goal of 15 minutes of reading per day, Monday through Friday. The reading can be done daily or all at once.

The basic program requirements are set to encourage those struggling with reading and the ones most helped by the program. The good readers complete the basic program early. A secondary program provides additional incentives to keep the children reading beyond the basic program.

This program allows the children to earn opportunity drawing tickets for prizes, which include electronic keyboards, kalimbas (thumb pianos), stuffed Little Critters and new toys that have been donated.

The adult program is much simpler. An adult reads a book, completes a short review on a program bookmark to earn an opportunity drawing ticket. Four bookmarks earn a free book.

To sign up for the Summer Reading Program, stop by the Library during normal business hours. The Summer Reading Program runs through August 1.

The Canyon Lake Knitters program has grown with the inclusion of school age children learning to knit. New and experienced knitters are always welcome to this educational/social group, which meets Wednesdays at 11 a.m.
