A trip to Turks and Caicos

Kris McDonald and Shayna Hicks took a “girls-only” trip to Turks and Caicos in the British Virgin Islands during March. The main reason for visiting Turks was to see Kris’ daughter, Miranda, a pastry chef at Club Med Turquoise.

Miranda graduated from culinary school just months before getting her dream job just steps away from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Shayna says this was the longest period of time Kris had been separated from her daughter, so the reunion upon arrival was “emotional and full of tears.”

Miranda was the perfect tour guide, showing Kris and Shayna where to shop, eat and hang out with the locals. A highlight of the trip was driving to Sapodilla Bay, a 900-foot long stretch of sheltered beach near the Chalk Sound, where they climbed a hill that overlooked a shipwreck and view of the beautiful turquoise water.

They then headed to the restaurant, Bugaloo’s, on the Caribbean side of the Island. The tables were in the sand and “the shrimp was amazing,” says Shayna. They were able to walk into the ocean and have a lesson on how to get conch out of its shell and to taste it.

After eating, shopping and driving around the Island, the ladies stumbled across the local fish fry, held once a week, and had fresh coconut rum drinks.

While Miranda was working, the ladies took full advantage of all the activities on the resort such as learning how to fly trapeze-style and taking sailing lessons on the catamaran.

“The Island is all about the beautiful beaches and turquoise water and that is where the majority of down time was spent,” says Shayna.

They plan on returning this summer with their husbands one more time before marinda transfers to another Club Med in six months.
