Honor military members with bricks, banners

Those who would like to order a memorial brick for the Veterans Monument in the Towne Center in time for Memorial Day weekend need to turn in an order form at City Hall by April 22. The bricks will be installed before May 23, although there is no formal ceremony planned for the occasion.

Order forms for purchasing a Veteran Memorial Brick are available at City Hall or Pack Wrap and Post in the Towne Center. An order form also can be downloaded at www.cityofcanyonlake.com. (Click on “Canyon Lake Veterans Memorial.”)

The brick includes three lines, 16 characters maximum, including spaces, per line. The price is $50 for each brick. Commemorative bricks can be purchased to honor a loved one that is a veteran or is currently serving in a branch of the military. The bricks will be installed in the patio of the monument.

Military Banners

Military banners to hang on light poles on Railroad Canyon Rd. and in the Towne Center also are available. These are to honor active duty military personnel and veterans who reside in Canyon Lake.

To participate, family members can pick up an application at City Hall or Pack Wrap and Post. Along with filling out the application, copies of the applicant’s driver’s license or a utility bill showing the Canyon Lake address of the military service person or his/her immediate family member will be required.

Also needed is a 5×7-in. color portrait of the service member in his/her military uniform for display on the banner (photos will not be returned). Digital photos with a resolution of 300 DPI or higher also will be accepted and can be e-mailed.

The spelling of the name on the banner will be taken directly from the application. The cost of each banner is $250 and includes installation. Active duty banners will be displayed year round. They will be removed when the service person is no longer serving active duty in the armed forces, or if the banner becomes damaged or when the program concludes.

Banners will be returned to the applicant after removal, or they will be placed on the wall in the City Council Chamber or at the Veterans Monument. Eligible branches of the military service include Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, Navy, Merchant Marines, National Guard Active Reserve.

Register at City Hall

Veterans or families of veterans who would like to see them honored at the Veterans Day Ceremony next November are asked to join the veterans registry at City Hall. One of the traditions of the Veterans Day Committee is to place flags in the front yards of every veteran’s home prior to Veterans Day.
