Wayne and Sandy Sands are one of the rare couples who can say they have been married 70 years! They tied the knot on February 22, 1945 in Porterville, California, and that’s where their sons, Perry and Ted, were born.

In 1953, they moved to Long Beach, California, where Wayne worked as a manager for an oil field supply company, and then as a sales office manager for an oil tool manufacturing company. Sandy worked for the City of Long Beach Gas Department for 30 years.

During that time they received a post card in the mail inviting them to a free dinner at a local restaurant and the chance to see a sales presentation for a new development in Riverside County. That led to the Sands visiting the new Corona Land Company development of Canyon Lake. They liked what they saw and purchased a lot on Green Pine Dr. in May 1968.

They spent many weekends here before building a house on the lot in 1980. When they retired in 1988, they moved permanently into their Canyon Lake home and got involved in a number of community clubs. Together they got involved in the Twirlers Square Dance Club, the Roadrunners RV Club and the Car Club.

Sandy also joined the Woman’s Club, where she served as treasurer. In addition, she joined the Women’s Golf Club and was a member of a bridge club and bunco group. Wayne joined the Men’s Golf Club and Canyon Lake Association of Men. He recorded the date he got a hole-in-one on the Golf Course Hole 13: April 10, 1995.

Some of their most memorable travels were taking an RV trip across the U.S. to the East Coast and south to the Florida Keys, as well as visiting the countries of Mexico, England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Japan, Bermuda, Panama, Costa Rica and the continent of South America.

These days, they continue to enjoy living in Canyon Lake and have many memories of the changes that have taken place over the years. They even have a video of the celebration that marked the community’s incorporation as a city. For their 70th wedding anniversary, the Sands’ sons and daughters-in-law, Perry and Nancy and Ted and Fran, arranged a three-day party and stay at the Marriott Vacation Club in Palm Desert. Wayne and Sandy also are blessed with four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
