TCHS Girls Soccer is CIF So. Sect. Div. 6 Champ

For the first time in Temescal Canyon High School history, Girls Soccer won the CIF-Southern Section Division 6 Championship. What made the win against Paloma Valley High School on March 7 even more exciting was that the PVHS Wildcats had defeated the TCHS Titans twice this season, winning the Sunbelt League Championship.

That the CIF Championship game would pit these league superstars against each other was rare indeed.

Among the Canyon Lake players is senior Marissa Everett, who has already signed to play soccer with the University of Oregon. During the championship game, with 12 minutes remaining in regulation play, Marissa scored a goal on a cross kick from McKenzie Cooper, the first goal allowed by the Wildcats in postseason play. Marissa also was involved in the game-winning play when she rebounded the throw-in from Sabrina Baca and Cyanne Smith kicked it into the goal for the 2-1 come-from-behind victory.

Temescal Canyon (21-4-2) keeper Emily Signorio made six saves in the game, while Paloma Valley (14-8-4) keeper Christina Rodriguez had 10 saves.

As Canyon Lake student Bailey Borchardt explains, “These teams were both very familiar with each other and how they played, so coming into the CIF game was really a ‘revenge/rematch’ type of feeling. The Titans had to beat this team to get the ring. When our soccer team made it into semi-finals, that was a huge deal for our school – they made history with just that. But for our girls soccer team to be able to go and win a CIF championship game, that’s awesome! I’ve never seen students at our school so proud.”

Soccer coach David Cox also is the school’s head athletic trainer with whom Bailey works as an athletic training student. She says, “Coach Cox has been able to really take over the soccer program and turn it into something great.” His assistant coach is Brad Post, whose parents Corky and Rita Post, live in Canyon Lake.
