Sanctuary

Skipper’s Island, that little bump of land near Happy Camp, is a bird sanctuary (unofficial) for hundreds of cormorants, geese, pelicans, blue herons, seagulls and ducks. The island has a dock, picnic tables, a barbecue and a trash can. It’s also the spot that fireworks are set off for Canyon Lake’s spectacular fireworks shows. To photographer Pat Van Dyke, Skipper’s Island is another opportunity for a wonderful photo depicting the beauty of Canyon Lake – especially with storm clouds playing peekaboo with the sun to create ever-changing shadows.
