Scott and Gaye Enochs say they “decided at the last minute” to jump on the Holland America cruise ship Zuiderdamn for a Mediterranean cruise, appreciating the ship for its smaller size. Scott adds that they “lucked out” by being upgraded to a suite balcony with 180-degree views.

Their first stop was in Barcelona where they took a double-decker bus tour of the city and visited the famous architecture of Antoni Gaudi.

On the 4th of July, their ship pulled into Monte Carlo, where they took a train excursion to Cannes, France. They also visited Monte Carlo’s famous casino. As the ship left port at 10 p.m., Scott says they were surprised when the town erupted in fireworks. “We were shocked because the French don’t celebrate the 4th of July that we know of.”

In Italy, they visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa and saw the walled city of Lucca and the Amalfi Coast. They stopped in Calvi, a tourist city on the island of Corsica, France, where they had their picture taken at a monument dedicated to Christopher Columbus.

The cruise concluded with three days in Rome. Scott says he “could go on and on” about the history, the islands, the churches, the castles and other sites they saw.

But he concludes by saying, “It was a great trip but a little hot and humid. I even lost six pounds after eating all I wanted, including six big lobsters on Captain’s Night.”

Cousins visit Washington DC

Cousins Alexa McKee and Nicole Allen, both of Canyon Lake, enjoyed a trip to Washington DC for a few days in mid-June with former Canyon Lake resident, Ruby Miller, who is Alexa’s aunt and Nicole’s grandmother.

The cousins say a few days just wasn’t enough time to see everything there is to see in Washington DC, but they squeezed as much as possible into their short trip.

They saw the usual memorials on the Washington Mall, visited several Smithsonian museums, and toured the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Arlington Cemetery, Ford’s Theater and the U.S. Capitol.
