Workshop will prepare kids to audition for summer show

Canyon Lake Community Theatre (CLCT) is offering a workshop to prepare everyone equally for the auditions for this summer’s all-kids production of “Wonderland.” Young people who have not yet entered high school are invited to learn a short song and dance routine that will be taught by CLCT President Ilene Moore. Ilene will cast and direct “Wonderland.”

The audition workshop will be held Wednesday, May 18, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the activity building at East Port Park. Wear comfortable clothing and shoes and bring $3 for the audition CD. The production fees will be $130 per child, plus membership to Canyon Lake Community Theatre, which is $15 and includes one adult and one child. Fees can be paid at the workshop or audition.

The audition date is set for Saturday, June 11. The show will be in Canyon Lake on the weekend of July 22 to 24, and will be performed at the Oasis in Menifee the following weekend.

Organizers describe “Wonderland” as an unabashedly silly adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s “Through the Looking Glass.” With hip-hopping music, it is an upbeat, coming-of-age story. Expect lots of parts for boys and girls with parts like: rockin sockin Humpty Dumpty; Tweedly Dee & Tweedly Dum; sassy and evil Red Queen; sweet, but confused White Queen; Alice of course; madder than a hatter Hatta; Red and White King; Red and White Knight; many singing and dancing Chess Pieces; a Train Conductor; star-struck tourists, a gospel group called The Responsibilities, and many fans.

Expect an eclectic mix of music that ranges from gypsy swing to doo-wop to bluegrass. For more information, call Producer Jaimie Woodward at 951-377-6861 or Director Ilene Moore at 909-239-1177.
