A48-PIC-annc-Opal-ParmerLioness Opal Parmer was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Award at the recent Lion/Lioness installation. The Melvin Jones award is the highest given to individuals by Lions International in recognition of their dedicated humanitarian services.

Opal was chosen by the Canyon Lake Lioness Club to receive this recognition for her dedication to the club since she joined in 2008.

Since her initiation, she has served as the Lioness Tamer in charge of club paraphernalia. She has worked on every project of both the Lioness and Lion Clubs in the community, attended the conventions and helped many of the members with doctor appointments and transportation.

Opal also ran Lioness Bingo for many years and was elected to be second vice-president in charge of visitations to other Lioness clubs during the coming year.

Docked boat gets swamped by waves

A50-PIC-1-annc-Sinking-boat-by-David-MolnerDavid Molner and Jana Zimmerman were boating last Saturday and noticed a boat at a dock across the lake from Sunset Beach that appeared to be getting swamped by waves.

David says they alerted Marine Patrol, which arrived in “less than a minute.” A second patrol was there just a minute later. David says the first Marine Patrol officer jumped into action with a hand-powered sump pump. As a wave rushed over the stern, the officer placed an absorbent “surface dike” around the boat to try to contain any petroleum product that could leak.

David says, “Marine Patrol should be commended for their quick response and efforts. Lesson learned: when parking your boat on the Main Lake, put it bow out. Water waves will and, in this case, did go over the back of the boat.”

Purdie big fish at East Port!

A51-PIC-Bran-Purdie-big-carpBryan Purdie says he caught this 34-pound carp last week while fishing in a float tube with a friend. He snagged it with 8-pound test line, then caught it by its tail. The friends were fishing near the East Port launch ramp and released the carp back into the water.

Bryan says, “I let it go to be caught another day – it was too big to not let live.”
