Near and Far with The Friday Flyer: Globe-trotting with The Friday Flyer in 2011

By Sharon Rice, Editor, The Friday Flyer

The angle and framing of this eerie scene was just right to earn Charlie and Evelyn Jenkins' photo of Skull Rock in Joshua Tree National Park the designation of "Most Interesting Backdrop." Charlie and Evelyn traveled to Joshua Tree on Valentine's Day 2011.

There was a tie for "Most Unusual Destination," – with both destinations being in the northern climes of North America. Here, Pat and Robb Smith pose with a sign they contributed to Sign Post Forest in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, Canada. The unusual forest boasted 71,526 signs from around the world at the time they visited in summer 2011.

There was a tie for "Most Unusual Destination," – with both destinations being in the northern climes of North America. Here, Sam and Jill Comras visit the “Polar Bear Capitol of the World,” Churchill, Manitoba, Canada – a place they describe as the most desolate and bleak place they’ve ever been – including an earlier trip to Antarctica.

The second "Most Humorous" award goes to Ginny Furnish, storyteller for the Canyon Lake Library, for taking time to pose with a decorated cow in New Glarus, Wisconsin.

None of this year's photographers took a picture with a sign or landmark bearing their name, but Marv and Dorothy Griswold took their own sign with them on their travels in Europe. (The Griswolds' family vacation is the theme of several cult classics starring Chevy Chase.) The Griswolds are pictured in Venice, Italy.

A contender for "Most Interesting Backdrop" was Carol Carnahan and Guy Rainwater's sea-diving pose in Cozumel; however, this has been done twice before with The Friday Flyer, so it's no longer quite so unusual.

Also a contender for "Most Interesting Backdrop" was the Petty, Whalen and Nunes pose with giant Galapagos tortoises during their trip to the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador and Costa Rica.

Each year Canyon Lake travelers are featured in “Near and Far with The Friday Flyer” as they display the community newspaper at their special destinations. And each January for the past five years, photos revealing the most unusual destination of the year and most interesting backdrop of the year are printed, along with other categories that may be included, based on the types of pictures received that year. Examples of such categories are Most Humorous, Most Enthusiastic and Sign Search – that is, finding a sign or landmark that bears the photographer's name.
